Regional Training Director - Amanda Striker, CDBA

Amanda studied psychology and animal science at Rutgers University where she was the co-founder and vice president of the Rutgers University Animal Behavior Club and regularly worked with a national service dog organization.  She started her career as a dog trainer conducting group classes and quickly earned a position as director of training, known for her strict requirements for certifying new trainers.

Her skill, drive, and dedication quickly landed her in the position of Behavior and Training Coordinator for the one of the largest no-kill animal shelters in the Northeast.

Amanda has always pursued opportunities that would allow her to work with animals. She was raised in a “pet friendly” home with a menagerie of animals from exotic birds to unruly foster dogs. Through the years she has worked hands on with a wide array of animals from rats and rabbits to hogs and goats – but always felt a special affinity for dogs.

"I've always been fascinated with animal behavior, the stranger the better. One of my favorite things to watch is the miss-communications between dogs and other species. Each species, breed, and each dog, has its own subtleties in communication that just fascinate me. I was always a "big dog" person, growing up around mostly shepherds, pits and labs. But I currently own two "little guys."  My boys are complete opposites and constantly keep me on my toes. I rescued my Rat Terrier mix from a shelter and he has shown me the complexities of aggression (even in such a small package) especially coupled with his reactive temperament, but he is a living example of how with enough skill and determination any obstacle can be overcome. My Papillon was given to me after at least half a dozen homes and he came with a completely different set of behavior problems. Having been raised to be a “purse dog” he couldn't cope with the stress of just being a dog. When alone for even a minute he would tear things apart, pee on furniture, and make screeching sounds that you would never guess came from a dog! Both of these dogs are now a happy part of my family, and they both serve as daily reminders of the importance of training.”

Having experienced both extremes of the training world going from old school "yank and crank" to new age "click and treat" she desperately sought a program that was balanced, effective, and  easy  for pet owners to implement and maintain. She began working with Canine Dimensions trainers who volunteered at the animal shelter where she worked - and she was immediately impressed. "I thought - this is it, training that WORKS without breaking the dog’s spirit or driving the human crazy.”

“This is my dream job, working with an amazing group of people that love what they do just as much as I do. I just want people to love and appreciate their animals as much as their pet loves them! Now I can help keep dogs happily in their homes and out of shelters.”
